Frequently asked questions

What is Drone-Map EU?

Drone-Map EU is a free interactive map of restricted UAS (drone) airspace in Europe. It renders the geographical zones defined under EU regulation 2019/947 — areas where drone flight is banned, temporarily restricted, or altitude-limited — on a live map.

Where does the zone data come from?

All zones come from datasets published by national aviation authorities, such as the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority (AACR) and Spain's ENAIRE/AESA. Drone-Map EU visualizes these official sources; it does not create or edit zones itself.

Which countries are covered?

Coverage currently includes Romania and Spain, and grows as new national data sources are added. The Countries page always lists the live set of supported countries. Countries without coverage are greyed out on the map.

What do the zone colors mean?

Red zones are permanent no-fly areas. Orange zones are temporary restrictions currently in force. Yellow zones are announced restrictions that are not yet active. Zones whose restriction only starts above a certain altitude are shown as altitude-limited ceilings.

How high can I legally fly a drone in the EU?

In the EU open category, the maximum flight altitude is 120 metres above ground level, set by EU regulation 2019/947. Individual geographical zones can impose lower limits or prohibit flight entirely.

Can I fly my drone inside a restricted zone?

Generally no. Flying in a restricted geographical zone requires an authorization from the responsible national aviation authority, and some zones are closed to drones entirely. Check the zone's details on the map and the authority's official publication before flying.

How current is the data?

The map queries the backend on every pan and zoom, and the backend serves the zones it ingests from the authorities' published datasets. Temporary restrictions display their validity dates when the source provides them.

Is Drone-Map EU an official source?

No. Drone-Map EU is an independent project that visualizes official data. It is not legal advice and not an operational flight-planning tool. Always verify current restrictions with your national aviation authority before flying.

Does Drone-Map EU cost anything?

No. Drone-Map EU is free to use, with no account or registration required.
